Self-esteem is a phrase that has come to mean a lot of different things. In some ways self-esteem is mostly a self descriptive phrase, but it surely has also become some sort of controversial concept with several meanings. We know self-esteem is really important to have, but have also been taught that you can have too much self-esteem. There are also many derivatives of self-esteem we speak about that may confuse us once we try to define confidence; things like self-confidence, self-worth, self-assurance, self-love, self-acceptance, self-assertiveness, together with self-responsibility.

Just like the health of the person is a consequence or effect of a lot of inter-related causes, so it is with self-esteem. If we want to increase our health, you can easily only do so by working on it indirectly- by working on our diet, our exercising, our mindset, our environment. So it is using self-esteem. If we prefer to increase our self-esteem, we can only do so by working on it indirectly- by taking care of those things that promote it.

Self-esteem is the relationship that there is with yourself, your sense of personal worth. Self-esteem might therefore look like a totally private issue. However, your self-esteem affects but not only your own life, but it affects the lives of everybody around you.

Your amount of self-esteem affects how you treat others that you interact with or avoid interaction with. You likely have been the victim of someone with low self-esteem one self. Maybe a colleague who has been trying to impose his or her way on others, a teacher who did his or her best to make your life miserable, or maybe merely takes a simple grumpy neighbour. The best (and worst) example with the negative impacts of other’s low self-esteem is perhaps each time a parent with low self-esteem behaves within a non-loving manner towards his or her children who in turn will grow up with a low self-esteem and do the identical to other people. Every word you say to others, every gesture and just about every action is influenced by your self-esteem. If you have a low self-esteem you will generally have a more negative effect on other people.

Your level of self-esteem is thus obviously not just a personal matter. Compare planned a country where the many political leaders have high self-esteem with a country in which most of the leaders have low self-esteem. If I lived in the united states with low self-esteem politicians I’d personally demonstrate for sending them all on a self-esteem course!

Your self-esteem has larger impact over other people’s lives than your competencies in mathematics, physics, popular music, history or any some other school subject. Yet self-esteem is not really officially taught in educational institutions. When I was a child, we had a publication called “I am good enough”. Now as an adult I can guess that it book was supposed to teach us self-esteem, but most of the students (including me) hated those classes because they were so boring. The teachers did not know how to teach self-esteem to young kids. They probably didn’t even realise why they were supposed to educate it. Fortunately or sorry to say, these classes were not many.

Teachers should be trained in how to help their students to find higher self-esteem. There should also be self-esteem trainers in every one big companies so that their employees can continue to develop their self-esteem. This would be a huge investment to both the schools and the companies due to the benefits that higher self-esteem among the students and employees would bring.

Leaving people to learn how to raise their self-esteem independently is too risky. Depends upon would benefit if more people learned methods to develop a high self-esteem.
